Colour Vision: Adapting to change

نویسنده

  • Vincent Walsh
چکیده

The colours we see reflect not only the light wavelengths presently being detected, but also those already received. To understand colour constancy therefore requires an understanding of adaptation in the visual system.

Not all face aftereffects are equal

After prolonged exposure to a female face, faces that had previously seemed androgynous are more likely to be judged as male. Similarly, after prolonged exposure to a face with expanded features, faces that had previously seemed normal are more likely to be judged as having contracted features. These facial aftereffects have both been attributed to the impact of adaptation upon a norm-based opp...

A Panoramic Color Vision System for Following Ill-Structured Roads

The ability to follow ill-structured roads, such as footpaths, dirt tracks and corridors, is important for mobile robot navigation. This paper presents a panoramic colour vision based road following system for ill-structured roads. Roads are modeled with rapidly adapting 3D colour histograms and a simple yet generic geometric model. The computational complexity of the geometric model fitting st...

Clustering of compressed illumination-invariant chromaticity signatures for efficient video summarization

Motivated by colour constancy work in physics-based vision, we develop a new low-dimensional video frame feature that is effectively insensitive to lighting change and apply the feature to keyframe production using hierarchical clustering. The new image feature results from normalising colour channels for frames and then treating 2D histograms of chromaticity as images and compressing these. Be...

A Method for the Automatic Analysis of Colour Category Pixel Shifts During Dichromatic Vision

In this paper we present a method for automatically evaluating the amount of colour changes images undergo when perceived by individuals with colour deficient vision. This measure enables the classification of images based on the extent images visually change when viewed by people with one of the three classes of dichromatic (protanopia, deuteranopia, and tritanopia) colour vision. By measuring...

Shift in Rayleigh matches after adaptation to monochromatic light of various intensities

The action spectrum for inducing a long-lasting protan shift in colour matches was investigated. Rayleigh matches were measured before and after 30 min adaptation to monochromatic light of 520, 550, 580 or 620 nm. For each wavelength, seven retinal illuminances, ranging from 3.0 to 5.0 log td, were chosen in random order. Results for one colour-normal observer show that the shift in Rayleigh ma...
